SUZUKI CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT

SUZUKI CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT

The Suzuki Clean Ocean Project is a global commitment towards creating a healthier marine environment…

Headquartered in Hamamatsu (Shizuoka, Japan), Suzuki Motor Corporation needs little introduction.

A leading manufacturer of cars, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and marine outboard engines, the multinational company introduced its annual ‘Clean-up the World Campaign’ in 2010.

The global initiative is essentially a series of organised events to remove debris from oceans, estuaries, rivers and other waterways to contribute to a healthier and cleaner marine environment.

Involving tens of thousands of people in over 50 countries since it began, Suzuki more recently extended its worldwide clean-up campaign even further – to fight the battle against marine plastic pollution at the source.

Enter the Suzuki Clean Ocean Project.

REDUCE THE USE

Suzuki has significantly reduced the use of plastic in packaging its outboard engines since 2020. Alternative eco-friendly packaging materials are used wherever possible.

Almost all Suzuki Marine Genuine Parts are also now packaged with paper-based materials, which has contributed to a 5.5-tonne reduction of plastic every year (in parts packaging alone).

Overall, since making the shift to more environmentally-friendly packaging, Suzuki’s marine division has slashed over 100 tonnes of plastic packaging from its business activities.

COLLECTING MICROPLASTICS

Marine plastic pollution has been a significant environmental issue for many years; now microplastics are of equal concern.

To tackle these issues, Suzuki engineers have developed the Micro-Plastic Collecting Device (MPC), which aims to collect microplastics by filtering the returning ocean water after it has been used for cooling the outboard engine.

The MPC device has been tested in over 15 countries, including Australia.

Upon analysis, all samples provided from around the world showed evidence of microplastics. Materials collected include acrylic, cellophane, epoxy, nylon, polypropylene, polyethylene, urethane, and vinyl ester.
